The US Federal Reserve has decided to keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged to evaluate inflation trends. Policymakers are assessing how high inflation might affect future monetary policy amid the upcoming midterm elections. Rising energy prices and tariffs contribute significantly to the ongoing inflation pressures faced by the economy. Traders are closely monitoring the upcoming Personal Consumption Expenditures inflation report for indications of future rate hikes.

Loading...×The US Federal Reserve on Wednesday kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 3.75%-4%, pausing after last month's quarter-percentage-point increase as policymakers assessed persistent inflation and the possibility of further monetary tightening in the world's largest economy. The decision by the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) came largely in line with market expectations. Traders, according to Reuters, had priced in a 90% probability of a pause ahead of the two-day policy meeting.

The rate decision comes less than a week before the November 3 US midterm elections, which will determine whether President Donald Trump's Republican Party retains control of Congress or loses one or both chambers to the Democrats.
With the pause widely anticipated, investors are now focused on how many additional rate increases the Fed may deliver in the coming months as inflation continues to remain well above its 2% target.
Live Events
The decision also comes against a challenging economic backdrop, with elevated energy prices, tariff-related costs and strong demand from the artificial intelligence industry adding to inflationary pressures.
Inflation remains the biggest challenge
The Fed's preferred inflation gauge, the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Price Index, has shown limited progress towards the central bank's 2% target in recent months.Reuters reported that headline inflation and several underlying measures rose in September, with annualised readings remaining at or above 3%. The official September PCE inflation report is scheduled for release on Thursday, a day after the Fed's policy announcement.
The persistence of price pressures has raised concerns that inflation is becoming increasingly broad-based, extending beyond energy and other supply-related disruptions.
Consumer spending has remained resilient, while strong investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure has contributed to demand across several sectors of the economy.
These developments have strengthened expectations that the Fed may have to maintain a restrictive monetary policy for longer to bring inflation under control.
Oil prices and tariffs add to inflation pressure
Energy prices have emerged as another major concern for US policymakers. Global benchmark crude oil prices have climbed to around $114 per barrel, rising nearly 20% since the beginning of September. The increase follows disruptions linked to the US-Israeli conflict with Iran, which have added to uncertainty over global energy supplies. Diesel prices have also risen sharply, creating additional cost pressures for businesses involved in agriculture, transportation, construction and manufacturing.
Higher energy costs can feed into prices across the economy, complicating the Fed's efforts to contain inflation.
Meanwhile, the effects of the Trump administration's tariffs continue to influence prices, adding to concerns about the durability of inflation. The combination of higher input costs and resilient consumer demand has made the outlook for inflation more uncertain.
Will the Fed raise rates again?
Market participants increasingly expect the central bank to resume raising interest rates if inflation continues to remain elevated. Some economists anticipate three additional increases of 25 basis points each over the coming meetings, with market expectations pointing towards quarterly hikes extending into June 2027.However, the timing and extent of future tightening will depend on incoming inflation data, consumer spending trends and broader economic conditions.
Fed Chair Kevin Warsh has previously emphasised the importance of returning inflation to the central bank's 2% target at a sufficiently rapid pace.
Since taking charge in May, Warsh has faced an economic environment in which several factors expected to ease inflation have yet to deliver meaningful relief.
The anticipated productivity benefits from artificial intelligence have yet to translate into lower economy-wide inflation, while the technology industry's rapid expansion has added to short-term demand.
The Fed will also have to assess whether higher energy prices and tariffs continue to spread through the economy, potentially making inflation more difficult to reverse.
For financial markets, the focus now shifts to Thursday's PCE inflation report and subsequent economic indicators for clues about the central bank's next policy move.
