The letter to government follows a meeting between airlines and Adani Group officials last week

Mumbai, India - February 8, 2017: Several Air India airplanes sitting on the tarmac at the Mumbai International airport in India.

The Airline Operators Committee (AOC) of Mumbai airport has petitioned the Civil Aviation Ministry for protection and approval of historical slots in the upcoming summer schedule.

The committee wrote to Ministry on Monday expressing concern over Adani Group-run Mumbai International Airport Limited’s (MIAL) decision to reduce capacity by five million passengers from next summer.

AOC which represents domestic and foreign airlines operating at Mumbai is opposed to an unilateral reduction in slots and has sought Ministry intervention.

Redevelopment

The letter to government follows a meeting between airlines and Adani Group officials last week. The group has proposed to reduce capacity as it redevelops Terminal 1 at Mumbai. At the meeting officials made a presentation on facilities at Navi Mumbai airport and asked airlines to share their transition plans by November 3.

Airlines however are seeking more time and want adherence to regulations. AOC said the airport’s actions appear inconsistent with the assurances given by during the meeting on October 13, wherein it was stated that future decisions would be taken mutually and in consultation with all stakeholders.

“We further request that no historical slots be denied, reduced, cancelled or reallocated unilaterally, without due process and adherence to the Civil Aviation Ministry and IATA Slot Guidelines,” AOC has said.
